Denim was originally made as workwear for miners. They needed sturdy pants that survived their hard work while searching for gold and silver. As soon as these mines in the West of America became out of business as most of the gold and silver was taken out people started to pick up their farmer life again. During these years, around the 1920s and 1930s, denim brands started to focus on that target group. Especially when the 1940s were dominated by the dude and dudette ranches. Even kids were dressed in a full denim suit while hanging around on these ranch days. The cornerstone of many pairs of jeans As soon as World War 2 started in the early 1940s denim brands were forced to skip unnecessary elements on their garments to save material for war. Even after the war most denim brands discontinued specific design elements such as the crotch rivet and cinch back to save material. The five-pocket from that period is still the cornerstone of many pairs of jeans how we find them in stores nowadays. The economy slowly started building up again When the war finished the economy started slowly building up again. Denim was still a workwear garment, worn by farmers, cowboys on their ranches, and laborers in general. It wasn’t worn on the streets as a fashion item, and most people couldn’t wear it to school either. It was not allowed. But, this soon changed when during the fifties cinemas screened movies that are now true cults such as The Wild One with Marlon Brando, and Rebel without a cause with James Dean. Those two guys were dressed in pairs of jeans, white t-shirts, leather jackets, and boots. They had the look of a rude boy. Dressing like their heroes When the youth started to watch these movies they were hooked, and they wanted to be like these new young heroes. They were the guys that were rebelling against society and their parents. They were rebelling against almost everything at that time! Some of these youth served in the army and as soon as they came back home again they missed their brothership during the serving time. They started their hang-out club, driving their motorcycles, just as the figureheads James Dean and Marlon Brando. It was not only the film industry that kick-off and shook the world back then. Also, the music industry was starting a revolution. In 1954, Elvis Presley signed his contract with Sun Records and two years later he achieved his number one hit ‘Heartbreak Hotel’. And, of course, also Elvis was supporting the denim style as most of his outfits were like the film guys, James and Marlon. Groundbreaking with films and movies As the music and film industries strengthened each other and became such big hits, the youth started to act like them. Wearing denim was still not a common thing, but luckily it was more and more seen so next to wearing it to work to do your job, it became also popular in daily life. You can imagine that all brands were jumping on this denim train and wanted to be part of this success too. It was a time that denim crossed over from workwear garments to an everyday style. As the 1950s were so groundbreaking with films and movies, denim became the talk of the town. That’s why this era is also known as the Golden Period. Peace, love and denim The years after the fifties, the sixties and seventies were dominated by hippies, customize jeans, and jackets. The flower power period and events such as Woodstock were all about denim. Peace and love were key and so were the mindsets of everyone. They reaped the benefits of the better times after the war. The economy was rising and the future looked bright again. People also became more open-minded, although still a lot of parents were concerned if their children going in the right direction in life. But, as with most new times, it all settled more and a new standard was shaping. A new revolution has started By the end of the seventies, and also the eighties denim became booming. Brands started to explore with washings as before you could only get your hands on dry denim, so denim that was rigid and needed to break in yourself. This started a new revolution with more options to buy your jeans in more colors and washes, but the fifties was the period everything changed. The period made such a big transition in many aspects, but the mindset of people and their looks of them were the biggest. Denim is here forever! Even nowadays, many denim heads are still dressing in the 1950s style, also if you’re not a rockabilly, but someone that focuses on classic and never-out-of-style pieces of garments. They are still wearing jeans made with selvedge fabrics, a genuine leather jacket, and a proper pair of boots. Pieces that last long, look better with age and are the cornerstones of many wardrobes. Even for women. Yes, you can say, the fifties were the golden days of denim! And, luckily this adventure and style continue…as denim is here forever!

O dönemde neredeyse her şeye karşı isyan ediyorlardı!
