What innovation will shape the future of denim?
Denim is always on the move, and so are trends. When there’s one trend hot topic another trend is slowly coming through already. You can say that denim never sleeps, always in action and ready for the next step. Some are more heavily influenced by innovations than others. Some are making more of a difference in the denim landscape as well. Just the tip of the iceberg is groundbreaking and shaking the entire industry.
The first and most remarkable innovation within the denim industry was the birth of the rivet. No one could expect that such a small extra element on a pair of jeans would make such a difference. Even today most of the jeans feature the rivet. Another remarkable milestone was the innovation of washing techniques, such as stone-washing. This started a revolution as it comes to washes in general on jeans. Only wearing rigid (unwashed pairs of jeans) became something from the past. From now on you could wear jeans that weren’t stiff and dark blue anymore. You looked cool from day one!
Make the world greener
The last 15 to 20 years in the denim industry have been dedicated to making the blue world a bit more greener. This means, more sustainable production techniques came alive to make processes smarter and less polluting for Mother Earth. A lot of innovations started to get indigo easier on the thread for example or to apply a certain wear pattern look on jeans with laser, or using bio cotton or blends to create the best and least polluting fibers, to name a few. Not to forget the rise of using of ozone gas instead of heavy chemicals in the washing process. This doesn’t only reduce water consumption, it also applies much quicker and is less polluting, for the earth, but also for the factory workers. But in a world that goes so fast, and becoming smarter each day, many innovations will come alive. Let’s highlight a few of these and think what will be the next step.
The future of denim
When making a pair of jeans, it all starts at the farmers. They’re growing cotton plants that make thread in the end. Nowadays, and in the future, regenerative cotton will be seen more and more. Using these farming practices restores soil health and biodiversity, reducing the environmental impact. Think also of using more and more post-consumer pairs of jeans and denim jackets to reuse them into new fabrics and jeans. Textile waste in general, and even recycled PET bottles are used in production in order to upcycle waste into something new. Next to that, alternatives for cotton, such as hemp and other blends, are used that need less water pesticides. All these alternatives are just in the first or second phases which will become more the standard in the future. An innovation that most probably becomes the standard in the end. Circularity in the denim industry is only at the forefront. There is so much over-production and waste each year that can be used to recreate them into new designs. While production has some trouble upcycling garments with plastics (stretch qualities), hopefully, this will become easier. Some artisanal denim brands are already using only old garments that they upcycle into new designs by simply tearing them apart and using panels or just small bits as patchwork or whatever for unique and one-of-a-kind jeans and jackets.

Technology in jeans
While most described innovations are already happening these days, the biggest innovation for the future is getting ready to get implemented in the industry. Technology will make a huge impact in the future. Think of denim fabrics that include technology to tweak the color of your denim fabric, think of bright at day and dark at night for example. Or fabrics that allow you to operate your mobile phone by easily sliding over your jeans. And not to forget about denim fabrics that give you insights into your medical situation, like your heartbeat. And with the changing climate situation in the world, denim fabrics are more breathable with just a simple click when warmer days are coming. What more innovations will strike in the future within the denim industry we don’t know, but we can say that the sky is the limit!
