Sustainability is a keyword these days. In every sector, it’s a hot topic, and so it is within the denim industry. Everyone is preaching for a better tomorrow. For a better and cleaner earth. Taking care of Mother Earth was never as important and relevant as now. We all need to take care of each other these days and give nature and the beautiful things on earth some extra attention. This is so our grandchildren can their kids can enjoy life to the fullest as we did as young ones. To achieve this, we need to take a step backward sometimes and think about what we can do to make this happen. Here are a few suggestions that everyone can easily apply to their lifestyle for a better tomorrow. For a better and cleaner blue denim earth!
Reuse and Recycle
As there’s already so much over-production in everything these days, it's good to embrace what’s already available. Therefore, reuse and recycle is a perfect step in the right direction. So, when you have a certain pair of jeans or jacket in your closet that doesn’t fit you anymore, bodywise or stylewise, give it to someone who needs it and can’t afford it. That’s a win-win, you make something happy and your closet isn’t filled with jeans that you don’t wear anyway. The recycle option is something the perfect solution to give new life to an older pair. You can easily apply some patches for example. Or create some authentic Japanese Sashiko stitching on it so your jeans will look way cooler. And it makes it truly unique too. Another win-win!
Some people still think that you need to wash after each wear day. But this isn’t the case at all. You also do not wash your sweater or jacket so often, do you? When you minimize washing your jeans to when they’re really dirty, you will save water and energy of course. This is better for Mother Earth, and your wallet too. An alternative to the washing machine can be a solid handwash. For this, you need way less water. And it’s better for the lifetime span of your jeans too. So no reason to skip this option anymore.
Reduce Your Purchases
If you take a look at an average closet, you will be surprised how many things are just worn a handful of times. And still, people think they need to shop each week. For a certain party, event, or other occasion. But what’s wrong with wearing a specific jeans or jacket more often? Denim is the perfect fabric that can be styled with many ofter fabrics. So let’s be creative and learn how to combine more instead of constantly buying new stuff that you don’t need. In the end, we only have two legs, right? And if we buy via e-commerce, let’s try to minimize the risk of buying the wrong jeans or size so less back and forth is needed with transportation. Good to know, Calik Denim’s concept Selfsized is helping a hand in this problem… Tip! And when you do buy something, buy less but better. Quality-made goods can last longer. Invest in better pairs of jeans that can be worn for many years to come!
Use More Public Transportation
For cleaner and more fresh air, we need to slow down using our car for each short trip. It’s healthier for you to jump on your bicycle and do some groceries. Doing some exercise is good for your mind, and body and also for the fades on your jeans ; ) And when it’s raining cats and dogs outside, public transportation is also a good alternative. Or what about driving together with someone, the carpool solution? Works perfectly too. And also fun as you’re having some time to have a chat with your BFF.
Educate and Stimulate Other People
Next to many denim ways to contribute to a cleaner earth, you can always influence other people to do the same. Share your own experiences without being too much of a teacher. Don’t throw away food, but share it with your neighbor or put it in the freezer for another day. Eat less meat, but more vegetables ; ) Don’t spoil too much water during the Summer in your garden, but keep on planting plants and trees. This will cool down your garden and make it more beautiful too. Use less energy, so don’t leave everything on when leaving the house. To end, be kind to yourself, your friends, and above all Mother Nature. We only have one, so take care of it!
