Creating a pair of jeans is a form of art. Every designer begins from scratch, most of the time with influences from other designers or brands. It can be quite a long process to get the desired result. When the design process is ready, the jeans will be produced. After production, the jeans go to the retailers that bought the jeans and in the end, consumers will buy and wear them. Ian Berry Ian Berry is a British artist who finds old pairs of denim, cuts them into pieces, and collages the sections of fabric back together in one-of-a-kind art. He started with the idea when he found an old pile of jeans, almost 15 years ago, after cleaning his house. He came up with the idea to give these old washed-out pairs a second life and started to make portraits of icons like Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Marilyn Monroe. All of them are strongly linked to the history of denim. Nowadays he takes his inspiration from places from all over the world, but also his hometown, London. While walking the streets he got inspired by laundries, pubs, and the underground. All his denim creations are so well made that it’s hard to believe that they’re only made with old types of denim, and using a scissor and glue. This authentic technique is used for a very long time and is very time-consuming as each Sashiko pattern is done entirely by hand. Sashiko also means literally little step, and that’s also what it takes. With Sashiko, Sashikodenim is bringing old pairs of jeans alive again. When they take these old styles apart, the design process begins. The focus of IF Denim is on developing garments consisting of sustainable used jeans, old stock pair jeans, and deadstock fabrics that are carefully selected and manufactured in their atelier. So far, they have succeeded in redeveloping overproduction and using denim on a larger scale into high-quality new consumer products with a circular story. After graduating she worked at major denim brands in Germany, but next to that, she also slowly got the inspiration to upcycle jeans. The used pairs of jeans are perfect due to all the different indigo tones that can be combined in jeans and jackets as patchwork. They concluded that there is a worldwide number of 150 million tons of fashion sold yearly. From which a large amount ends up in a landfill or gets burned.
