In the history of denim, there were many important years and milestones. Since the beginning of the miner period in California in 1850, the denim fabric is worldwide such a success. And above all, you can’t simply think of a world without this legendary fabric, right?! Denim styles and silhouettes changed a lot during the years, and every time there was another need and influence that shaped jeans. Some trends in denim came back, while others stayed with a specific period. But some changes evolved into better and more popular styles and looks. That’s also the good thing about denim, you can always choose another direction as the options are endless when it comes to designing, developing, and technologies for denim. Of course, some milestones shaped the denim industry and its popularity more than others. Let’s zoom in on 10 important milestones in the history of denim. There’re way more, but just like picking the right pair of jeans, this is also about making choices as you simply can’t highlight them all in the end. That would be something for a book, or two. The highlighted years 1873: On the 20th of May, tailor Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss received their U.S. patent for an ‘Improvement in Fastening Pocket-Openings’ by using metal rivets on work pants for miners. Fun fact: They had to pay roughly $68,- for the patent. Denim nerd fact: This rivet patent is known as No. 139,121. The rivet patent is seen a lot of times as the kick-off in denim. This little small copper part is still part of most pairs of jeans since its invention. Probably it will stay on jeans too, may be made from other material in the future which can be recycled easier, but still. 1901: Levi Strauss added for the very first time the fifth pocket on their overalls (jeans). This was the left back pocket, so this was the birth of the five-pocket jeans as we know them today. Most people use and know this term, but most people don’t know that the left pocket was the 5th pocket that created this term, they think that the fifth pocket was the coin or watch pocket. 1930-the 40s: This period is important and was time changing as most mines were closed because they were out of gold and silver. The miners went back to the countryside and started as cowboys or farmers. All the denim brands were focussing on this as well and started to market their brands with this lifestyle in mind. 1954: After World War 2 denim became very popular as soldiers that were stationed everywhere worldwide left their pairs of jeans. The youth started to wear denim as they saw the soldiers wearing them in their spare time. Next to that, movies were screened with actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean wearing them too. They became cult heroes! Also, women such as Marilyn Monroe were seen in roles wearing denim. Marilyn was wearing denim in the film ‘River of no return’ in 1954 and became a role model for many women. She became an early influencer when it comes to denim for women. The 1960s: During the 1960s the first pairs of jeans hit the market made with nylon to add some stretch to them. This made jeans way more comfortable to wear for the mass market. Before that time each pair of jeans was made with rigid denim fabric. Nowadays most pairs are made with stretch fabrics as most people want to wear comfortable pairs that they can use each day and on every occasion. The early 1960s: The 1960s were time-changing on a lot of denim milestones. One of the biggest was the festival Woodstock which was held in 1969. Most of the people that visited this music festival were dressed in denim (if they were wearing something ; )). They also customized jeans and jackets as well with paint, patches, embroideries, and so on. This makes the difference as denim was sold clean and basic back then. The sixties also introduced the first colored denim fabrics on the market. It was the kick-off to wear colored denim too next to blue versions. Even today these colored types of denim are popular, but this trend comes and goes like most trends are doing. 1976: The American pop duo Sonny and Cher were seen a lot in a total denim suit. This suit is better known as double denim and contains a pair of jeans together with a denim shirt or jacket. As the duo was popular a lot of youth started to wear this same outfit. If you look around on the streets today, the double denim style can be seen a lot by people, if you’re a rockstar or not. 1977: Most designers are using or using denim in their collections. But, it was Calvin Klein who showed as the first designer brand denim on a catwalk in 1977. This wasn’t common as denim was still seen as workwear and not design fabric. Luckily this changed, but this is also because denim fabric became softer wider color options and other influences that made the denim fabric more popular to use. Even today, Calvin Klein is still using the fabric in their collections. 2009: While sneakers were worn already for some years as a fashion statement, the comfortable jeggings started a movement in the world of denim too. People wanted to wear more comfortable clothing, but still with that typical rough denim look. The jeggings are now more replaced by stretch fabrics, but the first brand using this fabric was in 2009. A revolution as it became very popular, and still is. 2021: By highlighting these highlights of the denim industry you see that denim is constantly evolving, just like the rest of the world. And that’s a good sign! As denim is so powerful and popular it was also time for a change. The industry needed to be cleaner, and more eco-friendly, like most of the businesses outside of the denim industry too. Therefore, for a few years, everyone is focusing full force on sustainability. Making the industry greener and more future-proof with developments that fit the mindset and behavior of today. This is to be sure many highlights, milestones, and historical years can be made in denim. Denim for all, all for denim!

Marilyn 1954'te 'River of No Return' filminde denim giyiyordu ve birçok kadın için rol model oldu.
