Skinny jeans dominated the jeans market for nearly two decades. Now consumers are once again looking for straight and loose styles as the fashion forward fit. Skinny jeans have long been an economic powerhouse, dominating the $70 billion global jeans market for decades. Recently though, the seams on that trend have started to split as consumers park the once-dominant denim silhouette in favour of looser fits. Gen Z has long held the belief that pin-thin denim is out of style, a movement sparked on TikTok that officially called time on the skinny in 2020. And while millennials, who grew up with the trend in the aughts, still have a love for them, recent data suggests that the skinny’s reign might be coming to an end. In September last year retail insight platform EDITED reported that skinny jeans experienced the most significant dip in arrivals compared to other fits during 2022, down 52% for men and 29% for women – becoming the second most assorted style, following slim in menswear and straight in womenswear. If that isn’t enough proof of the shapeshifting occurring, you only have to look to the catwalks and social feeds to understand how much of a big, epoch-defining change is happening in the jeans department of the fashion world. Loose-fitting denim has been dominating the runway for more than a year now, with XXL jeans reemerging at the autumn/winter 2021 and spring/summer 2022 shows: Martine Rose, Peter Do and Balenciaga have all committed to baggy jeans for more than one season and seem to be asking themselves “How big can we go?”. Even the high priest of skinny, Hedi Slimane, the man who made the skinny and androgynous staple beloved by rock stars and rappers alike in the 2000s and 2010s, sent baggy jeans down the Celine runway with those colossal ‘elephant’ jeans.

And, if recent celebrity outfits are anything to go by, the baggy look is set to dominate S/S 2023 too. Whether it’s longer lengths, wider cuts, slouchier fits or generally more pronounced proportions, supersized denim has been the go-to for some of the most influential names around: A$AP Rocky likes his low-slung Chicano style, while Justin Bieber prefers his roomy and wide-legged cuts with chunky skate sneakers. It's not just for the boys either. Everybody’s favourite It-girls have worn baggy jeans, with the likes of Hailey, Dua, Riri and Bella all helping put low-rise jeans back on the map, a trend that has swept the women's market this summer. The movement makes sense, given the current times: over the last couple of years, we’ve all gravitated towards dressing for comfort, so why wouldn’t we approach our jeans that way? As wardrobes transitioned away from sweatpants during the pandemic, Lyst reported that searches for the roomy denim style rose 52 percent year-on-year, and baggy or wide-leg jeans received almost double the number of searches versus skinny jeans year-to-date. Denim mills have been leaning into the shift by providing authentic looking rigid fabrics - the kind of grainy open-end weaves and stonewash finishes synonymous with the 90s - but with the added advantages of today’s technologies. Calik’s D'enovated range offers distinctive twill lines and marbled constructions but with an ultra soft touch, while the RE/J range offers open-end looks but with the added benefit of 100% recycled content and water free Dyepro technology to contribute to circular economy. Culturally, much of this oversized obsession can be credited to ongoing nostalgia for the 90s and 00s. The era is synonymous with the big clothes worn by everyone from skaters to ravers and mall goths. It's these kinds of subcultural uniforms that permeate the designs of influential designers like Martine Rose and Balenciaga head Demna Gvasalia who have made blown-up proportions a staple of their respective brands. From floor-sweeping raver pants, to big, baggy fits distressed to almost destruction, these voluminous fits have become widespread within youth culture.

Independent labels like A1 Denim, Polar and 194 Local have been pushing big ol’ jeans to young tastemakers and skaters too, giving the silhouette street cred beyond catwalk trends. The latter, an East London-based vintage store recently scored a collaboration with Levi’s for a revival of its infamously baggy 90s Silver Tab line. Popularised in the 1990s, Levi’s SilverTab™ was a staple of the era, especially in the worlds of skate and hip-hop. And today it’s having a big resurgence. Not just in skate and hip-hop, but everywhere baggy style is embraced, including in East London, where the popular vintage shop has turned repurposed SilverTab™ jeans into one of their top-selling items. For their collaborative collaboration with Levi’s, 194 Local relied on new Levi’s® SilverTab™ Loose Fit Jeans rather than vintage, but the effect is still all about the baggy. Channeling the throwback look of the era, each pair was overdyed in one of four colors—lavender, mustard yellow, rust red, and chocolate brown. The colors are all based on things they liked and had in their shop from the ‘90s—like a pair of Armani trousers, or a Fresh Jive tee. It’s all meant to capture the look and feel of what Cook sees as a golden era of design, an era in which Levi’s SilverTab™ played a huge role. “The ‘90s just had the best fit in baggy jeans,” says Cook. “From skate companies, to Japanese designers, to Levi’s, it was just the era that had the best design.”

Much like the 90s and early 00s, the trend for oversized jeans chimes with the values and style preferences of younger consumers, many of whom prefer fluid approach to gender codes. The global fashion shopping platform Lyst found that searches for fashion pieces including agender-related keywords increased 33% this year. Specifically, Lyst has tracked spikes for searches of oversized T-shirts, like the ones Billie Eilish and Chika wear, have grown consistently on Lyst since the start of the year and are currently up 231% compared to the same period last year. Given the current post-pandemic landscape and socioeconomic climate, it's no surprise that many of us are seeking out oversized clothing as a mere reflection of comfort, whether it is literally for ease of movement or figuratively yearning for simpler times. Either way, the message is clear: Big jeans are back and the skinny is dead (for now)
