The early days of the 49’ers The history of denim kicks off around 1850 when they discovered gold in the mines of California, USA. A lot of people traveled to California hoping to explore gold so they could have a better life. In just a short time the news spread of the discovery and thousands of prospective gold miners traveled to San Francisco over land and sea. These people are now known as the 49’ers, as most arrived there in 1849. They say that in the beginning there were around 4,000 gold miners in that area, but soon, within a year, it was grown to 80,000 people. And, just a few years later, in 1853, it made the next step to 250,000 people searching for gold. The work was hard, and so were the conditions in those mines. Same as the places around it where they lived in villages. Overalls needed improvements Most of those people didn’t have much money so they were happy that they were provided with workwear clothing by the mining company. First, most of these men were wearing pairs of overalls made with so-called brown duck canvas, later they switched to denim fabrics. As the miners were wearing these pants each day, they had to be strong and durable. Luckily the fabrics were, but there were still some complaints. Most of the miners were putting the nuggets of gold into their pockets, but you can imagine that these pockets were quite full at a certain point, so pockets were going to tear out. Until one day… The story of the rivet The story goes that a women entered a tailor shop around 1871. This tailor shop was run by Jacob Davis in Reno, Nevada. The women came in and said that the overalls of her husband were tearing each time at the corners of the pockets. She asked Jacob Davis if he had an idea to prevent this. Jacob Davis experienced already with small copper rivets that he used to strengthen horse blankets, so he came up with the idea to use them for the overalls too. The pantent of the rivet Soon, many people followed with the same request to strengthen their overalls. The news went around very fast and soon he came up with the idea to do something with his idea. He decided to reach out to his fabric supplier, Levi Strauss, in 1871 if he was interested to join forces to patent his rivet idea on overalls as he couldn’t pay the amount of $68,- (which was a lot of money back then). At that point, Levi Strauss had been a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco for 20 years when Jacob Davis approached him about his great innovation for making sturdy men’s work pants with copper rivets. Together they got the patent on the 20th of May in 1873. This patent is known as No. 139,121: ‘Fastening Pocket-Openings’. It expired in 1890, so from that period everyone was allowed to create their version of the legendary rivet. Many different versions of the rivet Nowadays each, or almost all, pairs of jeans feature rivets. The first pair of Levi’s jeans with rivets had one back pocket, two pockets plus the watch pocket in front, a strap and buckle on the back of the waistband to cinch the pants in, and buttons for suspenders to hold the pants up. There’re many versions of rivets these days. You can find them branded and unbranded, but also in different shapes. In the beginning, the rivet was unbranded, but Levi’s changed this in 1874 so everyone could recognize if they were wearing an original pair of Levi’s. This branding element can be seen as one of the earliest in the history of jeans on a pair. Next to copper rivets, they’re other materials used for them as well, for example, plastic (not so common), but also in all kinds of colors. The rivet made the big difference You can truly say that the invention of using copper rivets on overalls was something extraordinary by Jacob Davis. He came up with an idea to make overalls, nowadays known as jeans, true and ultimate workwear pants. The fabric was always strong, but the construction of these overalls needed some improvements. The rivet made the difference. Such a big difference changed the entire industry. The rivets celebrates almost it’s 150 years anniversary Even today, after almost 150 years since the official introduction of the rivet it’s still part of almost all jeans. Everyone knows these small rivets, and it made jeans as we know them. The most popular piece of clothing is part of most people’s wardrobes. And since the entry of rivets into the industry of denim, you can easily say that it became the most sturdy, but also most comfortable pair of pants. Whether you’re young, old, rich, or poor.
