Cuffing jeans, not as a fashion statement

If you take a look at old west Cowboy pictures from the 1930s and 1940s you will notice that they’re most of the time wearing pairs of jeans with huge cuffs. Cuffing jeans was something common back in the days, but they didn’t do it as a ‘fashion statement’. Most of the time it had practical reasons, so let’s dive into this interesting subject.

Sanforized vs unsanforized denim fabrics

Firstly, the denim fabrics that were used back then to make pairs of jeans were shrink-to-fit, which means that the fabrics weren't Sanforized yet. Sanforizing was an invention by Sanford Lockwood Cluett. It’s a treatment for fabrics to reduce shrinkage from washing. This unique process was patented in the 1930s and prevents shrinking in both the length and width before cutting and producing pairs of jeans. Normally Sanforized denim fabrics will shrink around 1 to 3% compared to Unsanforized fabrics which will shrink around 10%. So, Unsanforized denim fabrics, also known as loomstate or shrink-to-fit, don’t get any treatment at a denim mill. This means that these fabrics will shrink up around 10% after the first wash. When you buy a pair of jeans made with Unsanforized denim fabric you will have to keep in mind to size up your waist size by two and the length of your jeans at least 3 inches. As you can imagine Cowboys were putting their jeans on straight from the stores without washing them first, so they had to cuff their jeans as they were way too long in the beginning. Brands were advertising to wash your jeans first or even take a bath while wearing your jeans to get them shaped to your body type and to shorten them.

The perfect place to stock personal belongings

As said, cuffing the jeans wasn’t a fashion statement for the Cowboys, it was a necessary thing as their jeans were way too long. They were wearing their jeans day in, day out without washing them so often, so most of these jeans stayed too long for a long time. Cuffing their jeans was a practical thing, but it became also a very handy tool while riding their horse to place personal belongings. It became the perfect ashtray, but also the perfect place to stock their cigarettes and tobacco. Next to that, some of them were using them for their small bottles of whiskey too. For the Cowboys, it was easier to put these into their cuffs instead of their saddlebags. Later boys in high school would use the cuffs as extra pockets too. They used it for their coins, candy, and even pencils.

The modern way of cuffing your jeans

Nowadays you will see the cuffs again at the true denim heads who want to show that their jeans are made with selvedge fabrics produced on shuttle looms. Those selvedge fabrics are a symbol of authentic, durable, and high-quality made pairs of jeans. Those jeans are part of the denim community, and the wearers are the modern cowboys. This keeps the history alive and also the cool look of cuffing your pair of jeans.
