How Would the World Look Like Without Denim?
Denim is everywhere, and everywhere is denim! It’s hard to imagine a world without denim as there aren’t places where you don’t see people wearing denim. There are many reasons why these blue pants are so extremely popular, even after all these years since they were first introduced to the world. The purpose may be different than back in the day as most people don’t buy a pair of work pants anymore.
Of course, some prefer to wear jeans while doing their jobs, but over time it has grown mostly into a fashion icon. A style that can be seen on catwalks, magazines, and on the streets. But what if there weren’t jeans in the world? How would the world look like…? Less blue, that’s for sure. Although it will never happen, let’s imagine that there will be no more blue jeans available anymore. Or even worse, it was never invented as we know it today. So, let’s close our eyes and fantasize about a world without denim.
Miners that don’t wear denim
Let’s start at the beginning of the birth of blue jeans, the miner's period. Miners weren’t wearing jeans, but still brown duck canvas pairs. Sturdy pairs that were made to last as well. As the story of blue jeans really kicked off when the rivet was born due to an invention by a tailor called Jacob Davis, the duck canvas wouldn’t be the same as jeans, and not so strong. The patent was received in 1873 and changed jeans forever. This first milestone of jeans would have never existed, probably. Later when mines were out of gold and silver, many people moved back to the countryside to start a ranch or farm. While working on their ranches or farms, they preferred to wear a bib overall or a pair of jeans. Most probably, they would wear brownish cloth or another dark color to avoid seeing spots or rips in the blink of an eye. Maybe they would prefer to wear herringbone materials or blue moleskin fabric. Very sturdy as well, and the good thing is that it will become very beautiful over time as well, just like denim.
Heroes without wearing denim
In the fifties period when the rock & roll era started with legends such as Elvis Presley, James Dean, and Marlon Brando, they would wear other styles, maybe vintage military or full leather suits, who knows. They wouldn’t made such an impact as denim is so synonymous with the rebel style, so maybe these would be the ultimate rebel outfit. Maybe these utility styles would influence the current fashion look way more now… Denim also has many trends such as the Canadian Tuxedo, better known as the double denim style, which wouldn’t be known by people. We would probably wear more sportswear and functional clothing as cargo pants, or more dressed up with chino styles.
Less innovations?
Denim means a lot of innovation these days. Many sustainable approaches these days are focused on saving the planet. Being good for Mother Nature. Also, using fewer chemicals and smart solutions to produce jeans. Without jeans, we would maybe think differently and have different challenges to avoid waste and pollution.
The world would look totally different.
It’s a fact that without denim, the world would look totally different. And probably a lot of inventions weren’t made in the history of fashion, but in history in general. Above all, people would not look that good, smart, sexy, and timeless as that’s what’s denim doing, right?! It is the coolest fabric on earth, so let’s stop dreaming that there weren’t jeans. Open your eyes and enjoy all the beautiful denim creations that are available everywhere. Let’s celebrate the beauty of denim!
